Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch and Installation Kit for a 2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD Diesel

Hi I have a 2006 GMC sierra 2500 diesel and have purchased a 2008 Cougar 5th wheel toy hauler model 310SRX GVWR 11,830 lbs.. Do I need a sliding hitch? And what would you recommend?

Expert Reply:

First, you would only need a sliding trailer hitch if your 2006 GMC Sierra has the 6-1/2 foot bed. For an 8 foot bed you would use a fixed 5th wheel hitch.

The first item you will need is an installation kit. I recommend the custom installation kit # RP50064-58. It will fit 6-1/2 foot or 8 foot beds. Custom installation kits take less time to install than universal kits and they require less drilling. I have included a link to the installation instructions and a link to a video showing a typical installation for you.

For an 8 foot bed, I recommend the 16K Reese hitch # RP30047. It is rated for 16,000 pounds and has a double pivoting head and double jaw for a secure king pin connection. I have included a link to a video review of this hitch for you.

For a 6-1/2 foot bed, I recommend the Reese 16K hitch # RP30075. This hitch is on a round tube slider which offers the most travel, 12 inches, to hep make tight turns. I have included a link to a video review of this hitch as well.
