Gen-Y 5th Wheel to Gooseneck or Flex Air For 20,000 lb Trailer With Lippert 1621SHD Pin Box

Question:

I have a grand design 399th, it is a 20klb trailer with 5th wheel. The truck is a dully dodge and it continues vibrating. Current 5th wheel is 1621SHD. I have a gooseneck and a fifth wheel on the truck and i wonder what you recommend. Flex air vs gen Y? Gooseneck vs fifth wheel.

Between the Flex Air and the Gen-Y system, I absolutely recommend going with the Gen-Y. While the pin box replacements with air bags do work, their air springs are something that has to be maintained, and if the right amount of air isn't in them at all times, or if they puncture, then you are stuck with just a standard pin box. The Gen-Y doesn't have that type of issue as it will always work, all the time.

The Gen-Y 5th wheel to gooseneck utilizes rubber cords in its internal construction that absorbs road shock, whether that is up-or-down movement or side-to-side movement, to give you a more comfortable ride at all times, so the vibration you are feeling will cease. And as bonus, using the Gen-Y also means you don't have a big 5th wheel hitch in the bed of your truck so it's open for you to use it if needed, and it's super simple to connect (the hitch ball automatically latches) and disconnect (via a cable on the coupler).

The only other thing you need to do is choose the right one. For your Lippert 1621SHD and a 20,000 lb trailer, the best option is going to depend on what your pin weight is; you'll want to choose the one with the pin weight that most closely matches yours:

- 2,000 lbs - 4,500 lbs Pin Weight: Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box # GY38FR

- 3,500 lbs - 5,500 lbs Pin Weight: Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box # GY66FR

Both the # GY66FR and # GY38FR have a 25,000 lb capacity which is more then enough for your trailer, and will connect to your 2-5/16" goosneck hitch ball.
