What Does "When Used With Weight Distribution" Mean For A Hitch's Capacity On A 2022 Jeep Cherokee?

I see the hitch says its tongue weight rating is: Maximum TW when used with weight distribution: 750 lbs But what specifically does it mean to use with weight distribution? Ive seen references to this in the Cherokee owners manual as well, but havent been able to glean exactly what it means. Does an individual vehicle need to purchased with a weight distributing chassis setup, or does the hitch need to be installed in a particular weight distributing way, or something else? I want to put a motorcycle carrier on my hitch, so maximizing my tongue weight is very important.

When looking at hitch capacities, when used with weight distribution will actually refer to a separate part used as a ball mount, for the lack of a better way to put it. If you take a look at the Curt Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System # C17500, it will explain that better. What these basically do is distribute the weight, hence the name, across more than just the one point a ball will lock into a coupler of a trailer. This allow something like the Curt # C13395, which is the confirmed fit for a 2020 Jeep Cherokee, to handle a higher towing and tongue weight. This is just for towing a trailer though.

If you are planning on using a motorcycle carrier, weight distribution will not apply, unfortunately. With that also said, the # C13395 hitch is also rated higher than that of your vehicle. Depending on how your Jeep was equipped, the maximum tongue weight capacity for the highest rated Cherokee is 450 pounds, so the hitch will be limited to that number. So if you take the Ultra-Fab Dirt Bike Carrier # UF48-979033, as an example, the 500 pound capacity will actually only be 450 pounds. With the carrier weighing 50 pounds, you then have 400 pounds of capacity to work with.

This is probably not the answer you were hoping for, but I do hope I cleared everything up for you.
