To install a trailer brake controller on your 1980 Dodge Ram PowerWagon W400, you are going to need a few parts. First off, you're going to need a 4 way trailer connector if one isn't already present. For this, I recommend using the Curt Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C58044. This is a plug and lead style harness that includes quick splice connectors making installation much faster and easier.

Now, once your 4 way is installed, you're going to need a 7 way. I recommend using # ETBC7 to accomplish this. This kit has everything you need to install a 7 way at the rear of your PowerWagon. To install this kit, all you need to do is plug in the 4 way adapter to the existing 4 way on your vehicle, and connect the black wire to a 12v power source, the blue wire to the output wire on the trailer brake controller the white wire is the ground wire, and finally the yellow wire is the auxiliary wire that connects to the reverse lights or reverse lockout for trailer brakes.

Finally, you're ready to install your brake controller. I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR. This brake controller hardwires into your factory wiring and plugs directly into the unit. When installed, the Tow-Pro is out of the way and will eliminate accidentally hitting the unit with your knee.
