Why Cant You Use Dexter Brake Assemblies On A Hayes/AL-KO Brake Flange
Question:
I have trailer that has a 7K axle with the old five bolt Hayes 12 X 2 electric brakes. The round magnets are shot and cannot be replace. I therefore need to replace the entire assembly. Can I replace the it with a Dexter or etrailer assembly or does it have to be the newer Hayes/AL CO/Redline assembly and why? Big price defferencial!

Helpful Expert Reply:
Well. the reason you can't replace your old Hayes brake assemblies with the Dexter # 23-105 or the etrailer # AKEBRK-6R is due to differences in the designs of the assemblies backing plates.
I recommend sticking with the Hayes/AL-KO brake assemblies # 185100 for the left side, and # 185150 for the right side.
