Guide for Adding Brakes to Trailer and Brake Controller for 2000 Chevy Silverado

Question:

I have a 2022 Kavavan utility trailer KSC-2990-72-10-DA that did not come with brakes but needs them. I will be pulling the trailer with a 2000 Silverado 4X4 with tow package but does not have an electric controller installed. I have routed the brake wire that was wrapped around the spare tire up to the fuse box in the engine compartment. I did not connect the wiring to the fuse box. What do I need in the way of a full kit that would satisfy my needs? I would also appreciate links to instructions for installing the controller and electric brakes. I want brakes that are self adjusting and easy to care for. Thank you in advance.

I attached a link on this page that covers everything on adding brakes to a trailer like yours for you to check out. The first thing you'll need to know though is the axle capacity of your trailer and then the wheel bolt pattern of the trailer wheels as that allows us to pick out the correct hub drums and then build everything else needed based around that. If you can get me that info I can help more or you can try following the help article.

Now for the brake controller I would recommend the Brake EVN #TK63VR which is very reliable and works great. It uses an inertia sensor to detect how hard you apply the vehicle brakes and applies a similar force on the trailer brakes. To install it in your 2000 Chevy Silverado all you need is the install harness part # 3025-P which plugs in under the dash.

Based on that info you have 3,500 lb trailer axle.

My recommendation is the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 3,500 lbs # AKEBRK-35-SA for each axle. These assemblies will work well for your axles and are self adjusting. If you don't already have the hub/drum assemblies, then I recommend using the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 3.5K E-Z Lube Axles - 10" Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2 - Pre-Greased # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K.
