It almost sounds like your trailer is drawing a little too much for the Tow Ready Harness # 118426 and it stops working temporarily. Usually when this happens the converter box will short out altogether so I would not continue to do this until you get something else figured out.

The maximum amperage for this unit is 2.1 amps per circuit on the stop/turn lights and 4.2 for the tail lights. This is not incredibly high so it is reasonable that you might be overdrawing the harness. You might have to convert your trailer tail lights to LEDs from incandescent since they draw considerably less. I attached a page that has all of the LED lights we offer.

You might also check the wiring of the # 118426 to be sure all the connectors are tight, a loose connection could cause intermittent function.

A short on the trailer could also cause the harness to short out. Check the wiring for any exposed or cut wires or corrosion in the connector and fix as necessary. I attached an FAQ on trailer wiring for you to check out also.
