Question:
I have a 2016 4Runner 2wd sr5 premium. I have been looking at what you recommended for flat towing a 4Runner. I know it is not recommended from Toyota but will be disconnecting the drive shaft. What are the options for the braking system and what are the pro’s and con’s. I saw the blue ox radio one for $XX but was wondering if there was a cheaper option. Thanks in advance.

The Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR is a popular braking system but there definitely some more cost-effective options that will provide you with the braking you need for your 2016 Toyota 4Runner.
If you like the portability of the Patriot 3 then I recommend checking out the Brake Buddy Classic 3 # HM39494. Brake Buddy has been in the flat tow braking business for a long time and this is their base system that basically has the bare minimum when it comes to features but it is reliable and gets the job done.
For a system that stays installed on your 4Runner I really like the Demco SBS Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251 because of how reliable it is and easy to get set up prior to towing. For something a little more cost-effective you can use the Roadmaster InvisiBrake # RM-8700 but from my understanding some people have had difficulty installing the pully system in the past.
The portable systems are easier to install but you have to install them every single time whereas the permanently installed options have a much longer initial installation time but after that they are very simple to get ready to tow. I recommend going with the Brake Buddy Classic 3 for a portable system or the SBS Stay-IN-Play DUO for the permanent system simply because of how reliable it is. I have attached some review videos for you to check out.
For a complete flat towing setup you will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, vehicle tow bar wiring, a supplemental braking system, and possibly a high-low adapter. If you do not have all of these components just let me know and I can make some additional recommendations for you.
Question:
Yes can you please send me all the recommended equipment I need for my year and model.

I'd be more than happy to!
Here is what I recommend for flat towing your 2016 Toyota 4Runner:
Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plate Kit - # 1185-1
etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar (with safety cables) - # e44ZR
Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit - # RM-15267
Brake Buddy Classic 3 # HM39494 OR SBS Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251
A lot of flat towing setups might require the use of a high-low adapter to keep the tow bar level while towing a vehicle. I have linked a helpful article for you to reference to see if this applies to you. There is also a link to our selection of high-low adapters on the article page if you do end up needing one.
