How to Upgrade Existing Axle on Northern Tool Trailer to 3500 lb Capacity

Question:

I have an Ironton 5x8 trailer from Northern Tool. I want to upgrade the axle to 3500lb axle and go to a 14 or 15 tire. What part or parts do you have that will be able to do that?

We do offer replacement axles, but the shortest off-the-shelf 3500 lb axle we offer would have an 89 inch hub face, which would be way too long. You'll also need to upgrade the suspension, but even then you won't necessarily have increased the trailer's capacity because the trailer's structure might not be capable of handling additional weight.

Your best bet would be to use a Timbren Axle-Less suspension, part # A35RS545 which includes idler hubs with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern that would be compatible with a 15 inch wheel/tire like # AM32395 or a 14 inch wheel/tire like # AC14R45WS.

The Timbren Axle-Less suspension will allow you to remove your existing leaf springs, because the system provides an integrated Aeon spring. Like I said, going this route won't necessarily increase the capacity of your trailer, but it will allow you to use a larger diameter wheel for additional ground clearance.

Short of ordering a custom axle (which we don't offer) with the correct hub face to hub face and center spring seat to center spring seat dimension, this would be the easiest way to go.
