Trailer Hitch and Wiring Recommendations for a 2008 Ford Escape
Question:
So I have a 2008 Ford Escape v-6 looking at adding a trailer hitch and wiring harness. I see two harnesss may work for this vehicle 118251 and 118551. In the reviews sounds like you need to add relays to the fuse box but need to check mine when I get home. So the question is if you go with the 118551 would you still need to add the relays? To me it looks like almost a wash to buy either when and then have to buy the relays too but which would actually perform the best overall?

The difference between wiring harness # 118551 and # 118251 is what models of the 2008 Ford Escape they fit. If your 2008 Ford Escape did NOT come with the factory tow package then you would use # 118551. If it did come with the tow package you would use # 118251. You can have a Ford dealer run the VIN of your Escape to tell you how it is equipped and then choose the correct harness.
You could technically use # 118551 with or without the factory tow package. However, it would be an extra expense if the vehicle already had the tow package. I have included links to the instructions and videos showing installation for both harnesses for you.
For a trailer hitch the most popular option is etrailer # e56AR. This is a Class III hitch with a 2-inch receiver. I have linked installation instructions for it as well.
I also recommend the etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.
