I have an A16 sliding hitch for a 2006 short bed truck can I upgrade just the head unit to an 20+ one?

The Curt R16 Round Tube Slider for E16 and A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # C16560 you have is only rated for up to 16,000lbs so you would need to replace the legs with the Curt R20 # C16550 as well as the head # C16540 to get a 20,000lb towing capacity. These can be purchased together with part # C16541.
