What Causes A-Frame Coupler to Pop Off Hitch Ball
Question:
I have a trailer been towing for 4 years. This week it popped of ball while going over a bridge which it’s never done. Everything was secure the way it’s suppose to be. My question is is there anything I can buy the keep this from happening again? I’ve had gent y hitch in pasted. Was thinking about one those and using pintle lock for added security. I’m sure pintle lock would have to be trimmed back to keep from rubbing coupler. Your thoughts? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Btw. It’s A frame coupler on 2-5-16 ball so no adjustment for coupler.

The best option for your trailer is a new trailer coupler as either the latch mechanism is worn or faulty. I strongly recommend against any sort of jerry-rigging here as there is too much at stake for you and the safety of those around you. This means you will likely need to cut off the old coupler and weld or bolt-on a new one, the Demco 50-Degree A-Frame Trailer Coupler part # DM16680-52 is what I recommend. You can use the etrailer Surge Brake Coupler Lock part # e98888 for extra security as well.
