Axle and Other Towing Part Recommendations for Small Overlanding Trailer
Question:
I was just wondering if you might be able to point me in the right direction for what I would need for my overland/gear transport trailer that Im building as far as axel size and rims. The trailer is going to be a 4x8 trailer that must accommodate the size of off-road tires with clearance. Im looking for an axel that will be the right size for the off-road tires and give me a fairly good carrying capacity. I have a set of tires that are General Tires Grabber a/tx 215/75r15s that I would like to use on the build. Im looking for rims that will fit these tires and also an axle to match the rims. This trailer is going to be the weekend camping trailer and will house several large items and all our camping equipment and just want to make sure I get the right axle and rims for the build.

For your application I recommend going with the Timbren Heavy-Duty Axle-Less Trailer Suspension - Straight Spindle - Off-Road Tires - 3,500 lbs # ASR35HDS01. This uses independent rubber suspension which is extremely popular among the off-roading community as it gives your trailer a much more stable ride quality. To add brakes and a hub/drum kit to this you'll need the Brake Set # 23-458-459 and Hub/Drum # AKHD-655-6-EZ-K which has a 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern. Since you're wanting to use vehicle tires you'll need to use vehicle-style wheels with the same 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern.
Attached are some installation videos for you to check out.
If you're still in the research phase of things I also recommend checking out the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller # RED44FR because it has 2 braking modes (one that is better for on-road and one that is better for off-road) as well as the Lock N Roll coupler set like parts # 336TS504 and # 336VS511 because this gives you the best control and connection for some of the different positions your trailer can get into with off-road towing.
