Transmission Cooler Suggestion for Towing in the Mountains with 2012 Chevy Silverado
Question:
I have a 2012 Silverado with 77,000 miles with a 5.3 V8. I am planning on pulling a 7000# gross travel trailer into the Carolinas mountains. Which transmission cooler would be the best to overcome any overheating issues?

Unless you live in Alaska or northern portions of Canada where it's below freezing for a good part of the year, we recommend getting the largest transmission cooler that will fit in the most efficient mounting spot which is directly behind the grille, in front of the radiator.
The Derale # D13504 measures 11x12, and would offer plenty of cooling to protect your transmission from the extra heat generated when negotiating mountainous terrain like the western Carolinas. The cooler would install inline on the return line from the radiator back to the transmission. To make the connection, you'll also need the # D13035 snap in fitting. By using the fitting, you won't need to cut or flare any transmission lines, it makes for a very easy installation.
I've linked to a video and some articles about transmission coolers that you might find helpful.
