Comparing Swagman E-Spec and Current Bike Racks for an SUV and a Ram ProMaster RV
Question:
Thanks for your answer. I have one other question the specs state that the Current is 49 lbs while the e-spec is listed at 60 lbs. could the e-spec really 11 lbs heavier? Other than the 2” support bar versus the 1 1/4” support seems to be the only difference that could weigh more.

You have a great eye. Both the Swagman E-Spec # S94FR and the Swagman Current # S64678 are super strong bike racks that are constructed for brute strength. This is because Swagman wanted both of these racks to be approved for use when attached to the back of motorhomes/RVs. However, the E-Spec has the advantage of strength because not only can the E-Spec withstand the extra force/torque exerted on it on the back of a motorhome/RV, it also can withstand the increased force when mounted on travel trailers, 5th-wheel trailers, and flat-towed vehicles.
Even though the Current # S64678 comes with a combination adapter that works with both 1-1/4" and 2" hitches, it can withstand the force on your SUV and Ram ProMaster van. We've had many neighbors that have praised the sturdiness of the Current when on their vans/motorhomes. There is one particular advantage of the Current over the E-Spec: if you have fat bike tires that measure 3-5 inches wide. If you have fat bike tires, I recommend going with the Current. This is because the E-Spec only fits bikes up to 3 inches wide and requires the adapter # S64679 for fat bikes.
However, for an overall stronger rack that provides you with 10 additional pounds of per-bike weight capacity than the Current (70 pounds total), I recommend going with the E-Spec. Another advantage of the E-Spec is that it comes with a longer shank to clear the rear bumper. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the closest part of the rack when folded, the E-Spec measures 10-1/2". This is compared to the much shorter 5-3/4" of the Current. As far as the hitch pins, the E-Spec comes with a regular threaded hitch pin as well as a locking threaded hitch pin. You will only insert one of these pins when you secure the rack to the hitch's shank.
Whether you decide to go with the E-Spec or the Current, if you plan to transport women's bikes, step-thru bikes, or children's bikes, you need the Swagman Bike Frame Adapter Bar # 64005 for each of those bikes. The adapter bar gives you bikes the straight, horizontal plane required to mount the bikes to the ratcheting hooks.
