Question:
I have a lot of experience working on cars, particularly electrical, so I have no doubt I can do this EXCEPT the routing of the black power wire is very convoluted and I do not have access to a life. It looks very difficult to do crawling under the vehicle. Is there no other source of DC +12V closer to the rear of the car. Even switched with the ignition would be OK trailer lights would not work without car running but so what?

Since your 2022 Ford Escape doesn't have the tow package and it has LED's you have no other option than to use a wiring harness that requires a power wire ran to the battery. The LED wiring harnesses are to small to splice into and you can't use anything without a power module because of the LEDs.
The Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector item # TE54FR is a better option for you because of Tekonsha's reliability and quality of their moduLite power module. I always recommend Tekonsha over Curt for this reason but you will still have a similar installation method. You can try to run the power wire through your Escape instead of underneath it. If you don't follow the instructions and tap into another source of power you will void all warranties given by any wiring harness manufacturer.
