Why Is the Draw-Tite Hitch for a 2019 Toyota Camry Rated Higher Than the Curt

I have installed a few Curt hitches and they are built very strong. Can you explain how Class II Draw Tite # 36643 can handle 350lbs TW and the Curt class I C11576 can only handle 200lbs TW? It seems the weak link is not the strong, beefy hitches, but the sheet metal of the Camry it is mounted to.

The Draw-Tite Hitch part # 36643 is a class II and the Curt Hitch part # C11576 is a class I so the Draw-Tite hitch maintains a higher capacity. I am not an engineer so I can't say exactly why the hitches were given one rating over another but it usually comes down to beefier metal and larger size hardware. That said, as you alluded to, the vehicle is the weak point. The hitch ratings are not tested with the vehicle so if the vehicle is rated lower than the hitch then that is the one you need to abide by. In other words, just because one has a higher rating does not mean you can tow/haul more weight.
