Slider Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 2012 Ford F250 With Short Bed

Hello, I currently own a 2012 f250 6.7 Diesel truck. I am looking at purchasing a fifthwheel with 11,000 dry weight with 14,000 gvwr. I am told that I will be okay and for somepeople not to do it. Truck ratings 10,000lbs and fifthwheel towing 15,200. I have 20 inch tires, with short bed.

You need to make certain you have the correct towing capacity, GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating), for your 2012 F250 truck. You can get this information from either your owners manual or your local dealership.

You will need to find the GTW. The easiest way to determine this is by adding the actual weight of the vehicle and the trailer, giving you the GCW (Gross Combined Weight), then subtracting the GVW (actual weight of the vehicle when fully loaded). This will give you the maximum GTW (Gross Trailer Weight). An example would be
The GVW, or truck when fully loaded weighs 9200 lbs and the GCWR is 22000 lbs. Subtract the weight of the loaded vehicle from the GCWR and the GTW is 12800 lbs.

For an F250 short bed truck with a 6.7 Diesel, I checked the Ford website and your truck has a towing capacity that ranges between 15400 and 16800 lbs, depending on your cab style and axle ratio. I would recommend a sliding fifth wheel hitch kit, like Reese Fifth Wheel, part # RP30075 and Reese Fifth Wheel Base Rails and Installation Kit, part # RP50026-58. This kit features 12 inches of fore/aft travel, which provides more clearance between the cab and the trailer when making turns, and has a 2-jaw locking system which provides more jaw to king pin contact and provides more security along with less rattle. The round tube slider also reduces binding and provides a smoother operation, This hitch has a gross towing weight of 16000 lbs, so based on the information you provided about your trailer, you should be fine. I have linked you to a product review video for this hitch.

The custom installation kit # RP50073-58, has custom vehicle specific brackets that mount easily to the existing holes in your F-250 frame, which minimizes drilling and measuring and cuts the installation time versus a universal bracket system. The kit includes the custom brackets, rails and hardware. I have linked you to an installation video for this kit.

I have also attached an FAQ article on fifth wheel hitches and installation tips.
