Does it matter if the ground is connected to the vehicle or the trailer?

The ground wire from the Hopkins Endurance 4-Way to 7-Way Adapter, # HM47200, should be grounded to either a clean, bare metal surface on the frame of the vehicle or to an existing ground stud on the vehicle.
On the trailer side, the ground wire from the trailer connector should be connected to a clean, bare metal surface on the trailer frame.
I have attached a typical trailer wiring diagram and highlighted the vehicle and trailer ground wires for you to check out.
