Question:
I have a 500 pound load I would like to raise vertically. I am thinking of using an overhead pulley and a DL25032 winch. This means the load is 90 degrees from the winch pulling horizontal. Will this winch work for this special application? Thanks.

I would go with a hoist instead of a winch. My recommendation is the Bulldog Winch Heavy-Duty Hoist - Synthetic Rope - Hawse Fairlead - 1,200 lbs, part # BDW74FR. It is specifically designed to lift heavy items, such as an engine or a motorcycle.
The Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Davit Winch w/ Remote - 2,700 lbs, part # DL25032, is not designed to be a hoist, so I would not recommend using it in this manner.
I have included a product description link and a video demo link below.
