Bias or Radial ST175/80-13 Trailer Tires w/ White Wheel & 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern

Dear etrailer, I have a tire replacement question: I got a used 13 Scamp trailer almost 19 years ago. To clarify, that is the Scamp in Backus, Minnesota, that makes camping trailers. I believe it is a 1988 that I have, which weighs under 1000lbs. The tires that were on it are now shot and dry-rotted, and the wheels are very rusted. The tires read Firestone Champion Deluxe A78-13. Looking online, I believe I saw somewhere that these tires are obsolete. Regardless, I am looking for replacements. I had found your site in one of my searches which directed me to your Kenda Loadstar white wheels with ST175/80D13 tires. I was interested in these for my travel trailer, but wanted to be sure this is a good choice and that they would work well for my application. The newer 13 Scamp trailers that are made come with 175/80R13 tires on a rim that utilize a 5-bolt pattern. My trailer, being older, uses a 4 on 4 bolt pattern. In the tire number codes, I believe the R stands for radial, and the D for bias ply. So I am not sure what to get. I cannot find any 4-bolt pattern white wheels with radial tires. Maybe I don't need them to be radial I don't know if it matters, but I want to ask your advice on the matter. Thank you

We can help you out here, and you are right that the "R" stands for radial and the "D" for bias tires. The difference is bias tires have a stiffer sidewall than radial tires, so radials flex more and run cooler. You can use either bias or radials though if you plan on longer trips, and traveling on the highway, then I recommend radials, but if you are just taking shorter, mostly local trips, you can go with the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM3S120.

Otherwise, the 175/80-13 radial tire and white wheel come separate, so you'd need to get them mounted, which can be done at any local tire shop. For that you'd need the following:

- Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C # AM10199

- Dexstar Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel - 13" x 4-1/2" Rim - 4 on 4 - White Powder Coat # AM20222DX

You would also need the valve stem for the radial tire and wheel, the Americana Rubber, Snap-In Valve Stem # AM20903.
