From the A/C you were looking at, I am assuming you have the Atwood Air Command # AT15028-22. This is model 15028. To hook up your A/C, you should not wire your 12v power source with your 120v power source. Doing so can ruin the A/C. With that being said, they should be wired independently to each of those power sources in order for the unit to function.

As far as the lack of power to the control unit, there may be some different routes you can take to address this issue. I looked up the instructional manual for the # AT15028-22, and they address different methods to troubleshoot the unit not turning on. I went ahead and attached a screenshot of these troubleshooting methods to this answer for your convenience.
