Just putting power solely on the 4-pole connector without a ground will not properly operate the wiring harness so that could be why you weren't able to get the rear lights to activate. You'll want to actually connect to your motorhome to test the wiring harness.

Since the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # HM56200 is a plug and play setup I recommend checking that the connectors don't have any damaged or bent pins and that they are fully connected. The next step would be to test the wiring to find where the power is being lost.

You can use a tester # PTW2993 to check if you're getting power at the motorhome's 4-way connector. If you're getting power before the converter box on the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # HM56200 but not after it then we know it's bad and the wiring harness will need to be replaced.
