Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2023 Mazda CX-50 with OEM 7-Way Harness

Question:

Im trying to find out about a brake controller for the 2023 Mazda CX-50. I have the Mazda 3500# hitch and Mazda 7 pin wiring harness options. The schematic for the 7 pin plug shows a brake wire but dealer has not been responsive at all about a brake controller. The ONLY thing I could find is a brief mention in a review While our trailers all used surge brakes, the CX-50 is pre-wired for an electric trailer brake controller under the dashboard. Can you help with information on installing a brake controller yet? I would prefer a wired controller over the Curt or equivalent remote version. Plus Im also not sure 30 amps is available at Mazda 7 way trailer socket. Thanks!

I have a brake controller recommendation but at this time it doesn't look like we (or our manufacturers) have any information or at least an adapter harness to fit with the wiring you have under the dashboard on your 2023 Mazda CX-50.

I recommend checking out the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR for your application because the only part of the controller that will be visible is the small control knob - this not only gives you multiple mounting location choices but it also gives you more space inside your CX-50. You'll need to install the controller by splicing into your OEM harness, connecting the following wires from the controller to the following functions:

Blue - 7-Way Output to Trailer
Black - 12V Power
White - Ground
Red - COLD Side of Stop Light Switch (only gets hot when brake pedal is pressed)

If the 7-Way on your CX-50 is prewired from the factory then it should have sufficient power and safety parts in place (like fuses and circuit breakers) for you to be able to tow safely.

Attached is a review video for you to check out.

Is there any update for this question? I do not feel comfortable splicing into the OEM harness. I have a 2024 Mazda CX-50 with OEM 7-way harness.

@AlexM We do have a custom adapter with the Curt # C32FV that works with your 2024 Mazda CX-50. You can either use with the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR (by cutting off the black side of the adapter and splicing it to the Redarc pigtail) or I recommend checking out the Curt Echo Under-Dash # C27JR which plugs into the same adapter and syncs up to an app on your phone to control the brakes. The controller mounts under your dash like the name implies so the inside of your cab stays clutter-free!

I purchased this adapter. my 2024 Mazda Cx50 factory brake controller plug has red, YELLOW, black and white wires. The Curt has red, BLUE, black and white. Only one in four wires in the pigtail match to the slots/colors in the factory receptacle. I am going to re-pin it so red to red, black to black, white to white, and Mazda yellow to Curt blue. Is this correct?

@ReversedW No, that is not correct. The factory wiring on your 2024 Mazda CX-50 will be using different colored wiring, but the functions should match this OEM plug. The wire colors for the Curt match with the following functions: Blue - 7-Way Output to Trailer Black - 12V Power White - Ground Red - COLD Side of Stop Light Switch (only gets hot when brake pedal is pressed) You can use a circuit tester to verify the functions and pinout on your Mazda - I don't recommend swapping the pins around on the adapter until you've verified that the functions are incorrect. If you do find that they are incorrect please let me know so I can look into it more as well.
