How to Pick Out a Weight Distribution System for a 2013 Dodge Ram

Question:

I have a new 2013 Dodge Hemi Ram. It has the factory installed class 4 trailer hitch. Some beginner questions . 1. How can I tell the maximum weight of a travel trailer I can tow.? 2. What would be a good anti sway product to purchase ? 3. What would be a good weight distribution product I could add to my hitch ? Any advice you can give I would greatly appreciate. I dont mind buying what I need but would like to do it right the first time. Thank You

There are a couple places you can check to determine the weight capacity of your 2013 Dodge Ram, the first place is the hitch itself. It should have a sticker that lists its capacities, or you can check the owners manual, there should be a section on towing that will have the capacities listed as well. Also, if you check the door jamb of your vehicle there should be a GCWR (gross combined weight rating), if you take that figure and subtract the curb weight of your trailer plus the weight of the cargo in your vehicle you will be left with your maximum trailer weight.

A weight distribution system would be an excellent idea to help reduce trailer sway. But honestly, the best way to prevent trailer sway is to properly load your trailer, having as much weight as far forward in the trailer will reduce sway the most.

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is ready to tow. You should include the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle as tongue weight as well. Check out the FAQ article I attached on determining tongue weight to help you determine yours.

The Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution # BXW1500 has a tongue weight rating of 1,000-1,500 lbs, if your tongue weight falls into that range this system should work well for you, if not you will need to pick a different system.

I attached a link that will take you to a page that has all of the Blue Ox weight distribution systems listed, the easiest way to pick out the system for you would be to select your tongue weight from the filter on the left side of the screen and then the appropriately rated systems will be listed.
