Recommended 7-Way Connector and Brake Controller for a 2022 Toyota Highlander
Question:
Hello! I want to add a 7-way connection and a hardwired brake controller to my 2022 Toyota Highlander with 4-pin factory tow package. For wiring, is it easier to use the ETBC7 or the TK57VR? What is the difference between the two? Second question: Which proportional hardwired brake controller would be the best fit? Several posts recommend the Curt Echo, but Id prefer something that is permanently installed and doesnt require a cell phone. Would the Redarc Liberty be a good choice or is there another brake controller that would be an easier install? Im looking for a set-up that can get me over the dirt roads of the Rockies, but not something for serious overlanding.

I would be happy to clarify things for you and make a couple of recommendations. You will want to use the Tekonsha item # TK57VR over the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller item # ETBC7. The Tekonsha is custom fit and will plug directly into a port on your Highlander plus it will provide you with a brake controller adapter so no splicing into your Highlander's wiring harness. The item # ETBC7 is a universal option and requires a lot of cutting and splicing of wires.
I have linked a review video below along with the installation instructions.
I highly recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller item # RED24FR. This is a proportional brake controller that has a unique installation method. The main unit can be hidden out of sight leaving the only visible portion being the nickel sized control knob that can be mounted on your dash or console. You will not have any issues going through the mountains with the Liberty. It uses an internal 3-axis accelerometer to measure the inertia of your tow vehicle.
You will want to use the Redarc Tow-Pro Wiring Adapter for Tekonsha Brake Controller Harness item # 331-TPH-017 to complete your installation. This will allow you to connect directly to the brake controller adapter that came with the Tekonsha item # TK57VR wiring harness.
To round out your towing setup I recommend the Curt Towing Starter Kit for 2" Hitches item # C45534. This towing kit will provide you with a 2" ball and a fixed ball mount with a 3/4" rise and 2" drop. It also includes a hitch pin and clip, hitch receiver lock with keys, hitch cover, and a storage case.
