Recommended Brakes/Actuator That Allow Single Axle Boat Trailer to Be Pushed in Reverse by Hand

Question:

I need to buy a full boat trailer surge brake rig from you folks but I’m running into a headache looking at the options. I need a system that can 100 disengage from all braking when the tow vehicle is disconnected. This is because I have to manually push my boat trailer into its parking spot in my garage! I believe all drum brakes that I have seen on your site don’t disengage fully. Or, if they are free backing won’t be able to roll the first foot or so by hand. They will need the tow rig to push them into reverse mode. Is there a drum brake and actuator that can completely disengage even when I push against it backing the boat into the garage by hand? If not, what disc brake actuator will 100 disengage the brakes so I can back it into the garage by hand. Thanks

The Dexter Brake Actuator part # T63FR which is for drum brakes has a manual lockout which means you can engage this at the coupler with a pin and this will then allow for reversing the trailer without free backing braking assemblies. This is done instantly and there should be no take-up to get the trailer to reverse like there is for free backing braking assemblies.

The Dexter Brake Actuator would then pair nicely with the Dexter Hydraulic Trailer Brake Kit part # 23-312-313 and Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly part # 84546UC3 which are designed for 3,500 lb axles. If you don't already have a brake line kit, I recommend the Kodiak Hydraulic Brake Line Kit part # 18SI-BLKIT.
