Parts Needed to Install 7-Way and Brake Controller 2004 Dodge Ram 1500

Question:

I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 single cab. The build sheet specifies a tow package with a 4 way plug. I want to change over to a 7 way plug to tow a car trailer. There is a blue colored receptacle plug under the left side of dash that is probably for a trailer brake controller. Just behind the exterior cab at the bottom of the truck bed are two plugs that the rear wiring harness plugs into. As I follow the harness to the rear of the truck bed the wiring splits off to the gas’s tank, tail lights, etc. and a 4 way trailer connector. There is no plug at the rear of the wiring harness that this connector plugs into. So I’m probably going to need a 7 way receptacle that this 4 way plug can tie into or plug into plus I’m guessing I’ll need to run two more wires. I’m wondering since I have a trailer brake controller plug under the dash, can I tie the two wires that I have to run into one of the wiring plugs behind the cab. I would like a brake controller that is hidden under the dash with a control knob controlling it mounted in the dash. Any help and recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the brake controller wiring you found under the dash of your 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 doesn't run to the rear of the vehicle. I would be shocked if any of the circuits are active though on that connector as everything we know on your vehicle indicates that there's nothing there.

So to convert to a 7-way and install a brake controller you would need the # ETBC7 which comes with everything needed for that. Since you want a knob brake controller the best option is the Redarch Tow Pro Liberty part # RED24FR and # RED69FR. This only puts a knob on your dash like you wanted an uses an inertia sensor to detect how hard you are applying the vehicle brakes to decide how hard to apply trailer brakes.
