There are a few distinct differences between the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13397 and # C12169. The # C13397 has a 2" receiver tube opening and has a matching capacity of 3,500lbs GTW, but higher TW capacity at 525lbs. The # C12169 has a 1-1/4" receiver tube opening and a lower TW capacity of 350lbs. The installation process for both hitches is the same and easy to do yourself if you consider yourself handy.
If I had to choose between the two I would have to go with the # C13397 for it's higher capacity and larger receiver tube opening. With a majority of hitch accessories requiring a 2" receiver it's going to be the most versatile option.
If you plan on towing a small trailer or want to add lights to a cargo carrier or bike rack then I also recommend picking up the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C59236 as well.
