Recommended Hitch for a 2001 Silverado 2500HD w/ a 12,000 lbs Capacity
Question:
I have a 2001 Silverado 2500hd 6.6 duramax crew cab short bed. Right now it has the factory hitch rated at 12,000lb. It is rusting and I am looking for a replacement. However I am a little confused. The owners manual states I can tow 15,200lb 5th wheel but says the hitch rated is limited to 12,000lb. If I upgrade to a higher class hitch would I be able to tow the higher weight of 15,200lb or is that for 5th wheel only. I’m trying to figure out if I’m stuck at 12,000lb only cause that hitch class isn’t high enough for the 15,200lb rating. Hope I didn’t make this too confusing for you. Thanks for the help

Not confusing at all. I took a look online and the 2001 Silverado 2500HD has a 12,000 lbs bumper pull towing capacity and a 15,200 lbs 5th wheel towing capacity. It's just two different capabilities of the truck. The extra weight of a 5th wheel trailer can be better supported when mounted more towards the center of your truck's frame.
With the 12,000 lbs capacity in mind, I recommend the B&W Heavy-Duty Trailer Hitch Receiver item # BWHDRH25182. This is the only hitch available for your truck with a 2" receiver that can reach a 12,000 lbs towing capacity without the use of a weight distribution system.
I have linked an installation video below.
If you are looking for a hitch with a 2-1/2" receiver, you will want the Curt Trailer Hitch item # C15703.
