Weight Distribution with Sway Control for a 3,500 Pound Trailer and 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser

Question:

I recently purchased a 2,900 lb. travel trailer with a GVWR of 3,500 lbs. I will be towing it with a 2012 FJ Cruiser. I am going to get either a Curt or Draw-Tite hitch receiver installed. I need to get a weight distribution hitch with sway control. Is there a hitch with active sway control that you can recommend for a tongue weight rated up to 500 lbs.? Thank you.

For your trailer with up to 500 pounds tongue weight you can use a system that is rated for 200 to 600 pounds tongue weight. But first, when calculating tongue weight you go by the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow plus the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. If that puts you under 600 pounds still then I recommend # RP66082.

This is the same system that you referenced, # RP66072, but it comes with a shank whereas RP66072 does not. You will just need to add a ball using # A-90 for a 2 inch or # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch. I have included links to the instructions for you and a video showing an installation for you.

I have also included links to some help articles on weight distribution and determining tongue weight for you.
