Finding the Brake Switch Wire to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

Question:

Hello - I have a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe limited with towing package. I need to install a Tekonsha Voyager brake controller that I pulled from another vehicle. I see the 2 different harnesses that I need to order - 1 to connect to my vehicle to create a 4 pin connector and then a second one to create the 7 pin connector from the 4 pin along with connections to the trailer brake controller. I have watched the installation video for a 2008 Kia Sedona and I think I understand what is being done. However, the only thing I am not clear on is what wire is the red wire on the brake controller connected to - you mention in the video that this wire connects directly to a wire somewhere near the brake pedal - but how do I identify this wire on my vehicle? Thanks for any help you can provide!

The brake controller red wire attaches to the cold side of the brake switch. To find the correct wire you will need a circuit tester, # PTW2993, or use the one that comes with the 4 and 7-Way installation kit # ETBC7. You will probe the brake switch wires (located above the brake pedal) with the tester until you find the one that has power only when the brake pedal is pressed.

If you think you have found the correct wire, make sure that it does not have power with the headlights on or turn signal engaged. If so, then it is not the correct wire. On the 2012 models, it was a gray and black wire so if you see a gray/black wire try it first.

I have linked a how-to article and the video in question that should help.
