Can The Towing Capacity Of The Vehicle Be Lower Than The Trailer Hitch Receiver
Question:
Am I correct in understanding that with a 2020 Dodge Durango RT without factory tow package, even if I add the class III or IV aftermarket hitch my vehicle will never be able to tow above 3500lbs? Even though the hitch we purchased from e-trailer has a 6000lb. Tow rating? Even though my RT comes stock with the 5.7L v8 Hemi, HD cooling, and rear leveling suspension?

Towing capacity of the vehicle can depend on numerous factors so the best way to accurately determine what your specific vehicle's capacity is would be to reach out to your local dealership with your VIN and they can look up the exact capacity for you.
Manufacturers do make trailer hitches that can exceed the capacity of the vehicle. You'll always be held to the lowest rated capacity though, which could be the vehicle's capacity or the hitch's capacity depending on the case. The etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98901 you were looking at does have a 6,000lb capacity, but if your vehicle only has a 3,500lb capacity you'll be limited to only 3,500lbs.
