Would It Be Safe To Haul a 7,600LB 5TH Wheel With a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 4X4 Extended Cab?

Question:

I have a 2004 GMC 4x4 extended cab short box, automatic with tow package and off road suspension with a 5.3 engine. I found a fifth wheel trailer.. 30 ft with a dry weight of 7595 lbs. Will my truck be able to handle this trailer, mainly for short trips and flat terrain. Thanks

According to the owners manual for your 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 extended cab with the automatic transmission it carries either a maximum trailer weight of 7,800lbs or 8,800lbs depending on the axle gear ratio. If you have 3.73 gears it is rated for up to 7,800lbs of trailer weight or 13,000lbs combined for truck and trailer. If you have the 4.10 gears it is rated for up to 8,800lbs of trailer weight or 14,000lbs combined for the truck and trailer. Personally even for short trips I would recommend either a lighter trailer or a more capable truck since you will also need to account for all your camping gear and others going camping with you.

To tow a 5th wheel with your Sierra I recommend using the B&W Patriot Sliding 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # BWRVK3270. You will need the Rail Kit # BWRVR3200 to mount it in your bed. Installing the Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate Air Helper Springs # AL88272 will also help you to reduce the rear end sag from the additional weight of the camper. This will make transporting your 5th wheel much safer.
