Adding Tail Lights To A Travel Trailer. Is The STL90RB Brighter Than The PE64AR?

Question:

I am adding tail lights and mounting them high on the back of a travel trailer because bikes on a carrier block the low factory lights. Comparing STL90rb optronics to PE64ar Peterson lights, in your opinion which would be brighter or rather get more attention. One has 17 diodes compared to 31. Is more better? In brake or turn indicator mode does just the center light up or all get brighter. Both have similar centers, did they work as reflectors? They are both similar in price, I just want something that show better even in fog.

Good morning Gregg good to hear from you again. Between the two lights you mentioned, the Optronics # STL90RB is going to be brighter than the Petersen # PE64AR. In this case more diodes is better and 31 diodes are certainly going to be brighter and more visible that 17 diodes.

Companies like Optronics and Petersen do not measure the brightness of these lights so I am afraid I do not have any hard numbers I can give you. If your goal is for the light to be more visible in foggy conditions, the Optronics # STL90RB will be the best option. Optronics products are known for being top quality. They really have set the standard as far as durable dependable trailer lights so you know you are getting something that will last.

As far as the functionality of the light, both of the lights will have two intensities. The lower intensity is for tail lights and is focused more in the center of a light. Then when you use the blinkers or brakes the rest of the light will illuminate to its full intensity. Both the Petersen and the Optronics light will work the same in this regard. Only the Optronics light has more diodes, so it is going to be a brighter, more concentrated light.

I will add that neither of these lights will function as a reflector. If you are wanting to add additional reflectors for visibility, I recommend something like the Optronics Trailer Reflector # RE10RB which is just a simple adhesive-backed 3-3/16" long x 1-7/16" wide reflector. We also have reflective strips # RE18T which work well for this purpose.
