Can the Kuat Piston Pro and Piston Pro X Be Used Behind a Travel Trailer?

Question:

I am looking at purchasing the Kuat Piston Pro for use occasionally on a fifth wheel camper. The receiver on the camper IS mounted to the frame/chassis. In reading the RV Compatibility warning for both the Piston Pro and Piston Pro X, it states: In addition, i the 2 inch receiver Transfer™ v2, ii the 2-inch receiver Piston® Pro X, and ili the Piston® SR with 2inch Hitch Adapter may be used on RVs both motorhomes and trailers satisfying all of the following requirements: 1 The receiver hitch is directly attached to the RV chassis, not just to the bumper and 2 The bicycle rack is in the 2-bike configuration with no add-on unit attached. My question is: are the Piston Pro and Piston Pro X substantially different to the point that the Piston Pro X IS travel trailer compatible but the Piston Pro is not? Thank you.

I spoke with my rep at Kuat and received this information. Both the Piston Pro item # KU76ZR and the Piston Pro X item # KU98VR Bike Rack are only rated to be used behind a class B RV with the hitch mounted the way you mentioned. They each have the same capacities and limitations when it comes to what vehicles and trailers they can be used on. So there's no difference and the information on our website is incorrect and will be updated.

Since you are wanting to use a Kuat bike rack on a 5th wheel trailer, your only option is the Transfer V2 Bike Rack item # KU84FR. The hitch on your trailer fits the requirements for use but you'll only have a 27 lbs capacity. This is a pretty low capacity and if you're needing something higher, I recommend the Hollywood Racks RV Rider Bike Rack item # HLY64FR which has a 80 lbs per bike capacity. The 5th wheel requirements are listed below:

Minimum trailer hitch tongue weight: 350 lbs
Minimum vehicle length: 24'
Minimum GVW = 5,000 lbs
