Can Cargo Box and Bike Rack Fit on a Malone LowBed MicroSport Trailer

Question:

Hi, Im considering this trailer to transport my kayaks: Malone LowBed MicroSport Trailer for 2 Heavy Kayaks - 7foot Bunks - 800 lbs Item MAL25FR. The reason Im looking at the LowBed specifically is because Im looking for a total height to be less than 30" for the storage space I have for it. I have a Toyota Highlander 2021. The hitch on my highlander starts 16" from ground. I have a few questions: 1. how do i connect the trailer to my hitch? what are the parts i need to purchase 2. Im interested to also install a bike rack on the trailer. Will this one fit: Malone Pilot Trailer Bike Rack - Wheel Mount Item MPG2100 ? 3. Also, will this box Malone MicroSport Trailer Storage Trunk fit the trailer under the kayaks? or is it either the bike rack or the box ? Thank you in advance for your advice!

Hey Tanya, thanks for reaching out!

To tow your trailer you'll need a ball mount with a 2" rise and for that I recommend going with the etrailer Ball Mount Kit # EBMK4. This gives you a 2-3/4" rise but that will still work for your application.

The Malone LowBed MicroSport Trailer # MAL25FR can accommodate the Malone Pilot Trailer Bike Rack # MPG2100, but while the Storage Trunk # MPG481 will physically be able to fit inside the frame of your trailer, I don't believe you'll be able to even fit both of the kayaks with the trunk installed so I recommend using the bike rack.

We do have some alternative cargo box options like the Yakima DeepSpace # Y65RR, but this will end up being a bit more pricey, especially if you don't already have a roof rack.

Thank you for the detailed response, Jon! Is there another storage box that would fit in the frame of the # MAL25FR trailer with 2 kayaks?

@Tanya Unfortunately not. You might be able to modify something to get it to work, but we haven't done anything like that.

@JonG thank you again! Another question - I'm comparing the Malone LowBed MicroSport Trailer # MAL25FR to Malone MicroSportXT Trailer - 78" Crossbars - Retractable Tongue - Item # MPG460XT. It seems like they are the same height from floor to top of crossbars and the major differences are : 1. the retractable tongue 2. no spare tire 3. no kayak holders Is that correct? Or is the listed height of the MAL25FR including the kayak holders? I would ideally like a MAL25FR -like model with a retractable tongue (since i want the kayak holders and the spare tire and total height up to 30 inch). Does such model exist?

@Tanya The overall height of these trailers is as follows: - LowBed MicroSport # MAL25FR - 22" - MicroSportXT # MPG460XT - 30" These heights include the crossbars and bun boards, in the case of the LowBed. The MicroSportXT has the crossbars sitting up a bit higher which is why you see the 8" difference between the two. To achieve what you're wanting, you can use the Malone MicroSportXT Trailer # MPG460XT along with the MicroSport to LowBed Trailer Conversion Support Tubes # MAL33TR, and then add the Spare Tire Kit # MPG465 and Bunk Boards Kit # MPG561. This will get you a trailer that is 22" tall with the retractable tongue, a spare tire, and the bunk boards for your kayaks. I'm not seeing that Malone has a specific kit with these exact parts you're wanting in their lineup, but you can piece it together with the parts mentioned in the paragraph above.
