What is Needed for 7-Way & Brake Controller on 2018 Ford Edge With Tow Package
Question:
hello, I have a question about installing a 7 way adapter and Brake Controller for a 2018 Ford Edge SEL with factory installed Tow package. The SUV already has a 4 flat connection available factory installed. I found this 218041. This talks to a 2017 Ford Edge which is the same generation as mine, but it doesnt mention having the factory installed tow package. My question is: does having the factory installed tow package change which 7 way adapter or brake controller I would want to install? Does my SUV come with an existing plug connection anywhere which would make the install easier? for example, not needing to drill through the firewall into the cabin, or not needing to run a wire all the way up to the battery to get power? I would prefer a hard wired install for reliability reasons vs a wireless brake controller. but if a wireless brake controller was significantly easier to install, i would consider that option

Hey Jason,
Really good questions and we can definitely address them. The tow package on your 2018 Ford Edge only gives the 4-way and there isn't a different option for the 7-way. So because you already have the 4-way with the tow package, the other part you'd need is the 7-way which comes with the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7.
You'll plug the 4-way into the 7-way that comes with the # ETBC7, which also comes with the rest of the wiring needed to complete the install. That said, your '18 Edge does not have any plug connection for a brake controller, so you'll have run wires to the battery and drill a small hole through the firewall to make the connections.
And I agree with you that hardwired really is the way to go in terms of reliability, and the most reliable is going to be the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195.
So this is what I'd go with and I've added a link below to a video showing an install of the 7-way and brake controller on a '16 Edge, which is the same generation as your 2018 Edge so you can see exactly how the install will go.
