Parts Needed To Add A Brake Controller To A 2024 Toyota Highlander

Question:

Just want to confirm all I need is this wiring harness pluss a barke controller to install a 7 pin plug on my 2024 Toyota Highlander? This takes care of the issue of the brake controller backfeeding 12 v into the brake circuit and causing problems so I dont need a seperate diode? I understand the convience of using a Tekonsha brake controller but I should b able to use other controllers as well? Lastly when I bought my Toyota I got them to throw in the trailer light modlule and the 4 pin connector wiring harness if I use this Tekonsha custom harness I shouldnt need the two parts I got from Toyota, correct?

Hey Frank,

The Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness w Brake Controller Adapter # TK57VR would work as long as you have a factory connector in the rear cargo area to plug into for your light functions. This connector is typically hidden under the trim panel on the driver's side, usually there's a cup holder you can pop out to get to it. You shouldn't need the other wire harnesses but I would hang onto them as a backup just incase.

You can use the included brake controller wire harness to connect to a Tekonsha brake controller or you can splice into the harness from another brake controller. Personally, I recommend going with the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED52VR and using part # RED48FR to mount the control knob into the dash in a blank for a more factory look. The blue, red, white, and black wires from both harnesses and be matched. together color for color.

The # TK57VR doesn't include a mounting bracket so I recommend also picking up a no-drill bracket # 18136 and 7-way bracket # 18138 to make mounting the 7-way easier.
