Are There 72 Inch 3,500 lb Axles

Question:

I want to build a wood fired only BBQ pit on a single axle. It will be 4foot X 6foot X 16 I have need for help on the axle and spring configuration as I have not built one before. I want a 4foot tongue and as low to the ground as possible and enough room to put a shield between the box and the tires. My plan is to build the box and the grill as one unit and bolt the box to the frame for easy removal. The box is made from 10 Ga. metal 3/16inch angle iron on the top edge and the grill frame will be made of 3/16inch as well. With 12inch of 3inch heavy duty channel for the grill support. I am thinking a 3500 pound axle. Can 6foot axles be purchased? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

Hi Bill,

You can get a 6 foot (72 inch) long axle, though not one rated for 3,500 lbs; the max capacity for that length is the 2,200 lb Dexter Trailer Idler Axle w/ Hubs # 20545I-EZ-72-10. The shortest 3,500 lb axle is the 89 inch Trailer Axle With Idler Hubs # e65GR.

There is a different option which doesn't require any specific length which I also wanted to mention, which is the Timbren Axle-Less Suspension # ASR3500S05. These are a standard height but there is also one with a 4" drop since you mentioned wanting to get it as low as possible, which is part # A35RD545.

These are independent units that bolt directly to the frame of the trailer so you don't have to worry about the length of the axle beam. They are pricier than a standard axle, but I wanted to at least give you the option to consider.
