Thoughts on Hauling 220 LB ATV in Hitch Carrier Using 18 Inch Hitch Extension on 2007 Chev Avalanche

I have an 07 Avalanche - I wish to haul a 220lbs small atv quad in a hitch carrier with the tailgate down. A hitch extension of 18-24inch would be required. The carrier can be partially supported with motorcycle straps to tie down hooks in the bed. Any thoughts on this setup and which extension should I use?

I recommend that you start off by checking your owner's manual to determine the tongue weight capacity of your 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche and the hitch receiver. Exceeding these capacities could damage the truck or cause the attachment points between the vehicle and the hitch to fail.

The longest standard 2 inch hitch receiver extension is our Hidden Hitch 18 Inch Extender, # HE18. You will also need to keep in mind that using an extender will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the vehicle and/or hitch by 50 percent. Whichever has the lowest tongue weight capacity, half of that will be your weight limit.

Although you may be within the weight capacity limits of the vehicle and the hitch, I do not recommend using a hitch extender with your hitch carrier. Having a 220 pound ATV carried 18 inches further away from the vehicle will not only affect your ground clearance but will also cause added stress on the hitch and a lot of bounce for the carrier. Using motorcycle straps to help support the load will not prevent this.

I personally would look into obtaining a small trailer to haul your ATV or lift the tailgate on the Avalanche and use the carrier without a hitch extender. Either of these would be a much safer, secure option.
