How to Pick Out Replacement Hubs for a Boat Trailer

Question:

Manufacturer of trailer is Fabrique Par./ escort trailer Corporation Model number WT2008. The sticker on the trailer is so faded I could barely read the model number. Anyway, I am carrying a 19 foot 1998 out of production Bayliner Maxum. I need two hubs because of the abuse from backyard mechanics including myself learning the hard way. Will use a brass rod next time to tap out the races. So my race now does not have an even place to seat and I think that is whats causing my bearings to overheat in a very short time because when I inspect the spindles I see that they are starting to turn blue and also the part of the bearing that fits over the spindle turning the same color but have not got hot enough to gald the spindle. The previous owner had trouble with the spindle Galding and I dressed that up with some fine emery cloth. The bearings do not wobble when I put them on the spindle and from what I read on the Internet is that the spindle should be fine. The spindles or smooth and the bearings go on and still have a close tolerance. One of the bearing numbers is L44610 The bolt center is 4 1/8 inch. I took a stiff piece of wire and measured from the far side of a stud hole in the wheel to the second stud hole and measured to the center of that hole. Then measured the wire with the dial caliper and it was exactly 4 1/8 inch. Maybe you will tell me I need to remeasure the bolt center but I dont think Im off on that measurement. but if you tell me to I will remeasure the bolts center. There is nothing on the backside of the hub that bolts to the trailer all that is back there is the rear grease seal. Having a hard time trying to find the size hub that I need. The hub does have a five stud bolt pattern. If it helps anything that Escourt trailer is all galvanized Or can the hubs be machined so that the race will sit square in the hub? The hubs are pretty rusty and corroded on the outside. oops I got my cat in there by accident.

In order to pick out the correct hub assembly for a trailer you are going to need know a few key pieces of information. The first thing you will need to know is the bolt pattern of your hubs. Since the figure you came up with doesn't match any of the 5-bolt bolt patterns I am going to need to to recheck your bolt pattern. For further info on this check out the FAQ article I attached on this.

Next thing you will need to know is what spindle you have on your trailer. In order to do that you can either get the inner and outer bearing numbers from a hub or use a dial caliper to get exact measurements of the spindle. The one number you gave me is actually a race number. I'll need both bearing numbers preferably. The measurements needed are the parts of the spindle where the bearings ride (see pic.)

If you get back to me with that info I will help you pick out a replacement hub. I would recommend just replacing what you have since it sounds like yours are pretty rough and in need of replacing. Nothing normally attaches the backside of the hub to the trailer. The hub moves so if it was attached to the trailer it wouldn't work properly.

Question:

Heres some information you were requiring about my boat trailer hubs. Are there better bearings to use than national or Timken? Why not use sealed bearings? It seems like it would be less of a messy job. I did get a better measurement on my bolt center for the hub. Both spindles looks to be in about the same condition on top and the bottom of the spindle. I do see tooling marks from the Final Cut when the spindle was made. Should the area where the bearings ride Shine like a mirror? While dressing the spindle I have never purposely tried to get all of the tooling marks out. I wrote down all the numbers I could find on both bearings and I hope that was enough for you. I cant think of anything more to tell you and I hope this solves my problem. Which bearings do you seem to have the most luck with? I can only send one picture thats all the phone will allow me to send. The areas of the spindle where there are no bearings does have rust on them from some time ago. My grease seal seems to be working fine though. Guess I could clean it up a little bit where both of the seals seal against the axle.

Thank you for the measurements you provided, they are very helpful and tell us everything we need to know to recommend parts that will work for you. Based on your bearing numbers and spindle measurements you need a 3,500 lb hub with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. The type of hub that you need will depend on whether you have brakes or want a galvanized versus a painted finish.

For idler hubs (no brakes), you can use part # 84545BX or # 84545UC1-EZ for EZ Lube spindles. These hubs are also offered in a galvanized finish as part # 84545BX (non EZ Lube). These hubs come with the races already pressed in and they include the bearings, seal, grease cap and lug nuts.

If you have drum brakes and need a hub/drum assembly, you can use part # 84546UC3 or # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K for EZ Lube spindles. These hubs are also offered in a galvanized finish as part # 8-247-50UC3 and # 8-247-50UC3-EZ for EZ Lube.

It doesn't sound like your boat trailer has disc brakes, but just in case you are interested, the disc brake kit that I recommend the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit, # K2HR35D.

National and Timken are good bearings that are used by many trailer manufacturers and typically only fail if something else is causing wear or heat build-up. Sealed bearings are not used simply because most bearing manufacturers simply do not make sealed bearings for trailer hubs. Sealed bearings would be less messy, but I would think it ultimately comes down to cost.

The bearing surface on the spindle does not have to shine like a mirror, but you want to look at it very closely and make sure there are no groove, uneven wear or nicks on the spindle. Rusting can happen over time, especially if water gets into the hub or the spindles were exposed to the elements for some time. It would be best to try to remove as much rust as possible to make sure it has not gotten too bad.
