Difficulty of Relocating Exhaust Hanger for Hitch Installation on 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis LS
Question:
Hi, Im interested in putting a trailer hitch on my 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis LS. It has a dual exhaust system. The specs for the part Im considering purchasing, the 13703 from Curt states that some exhaust system bracket changes are required. Im wondering if further advice is available about the necessary changes, and if they could be considered within the realm of a generally capable home handyman. Or will I likely need to talk to an exhaust expert to relocate said bracket. Thanks!!

Installation of the Curt Class III trailer hitch # 13707 that you referenced will require exhaust hanger modification on your 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis LS with dual exhaust. The hanger is essentially a steel rod that connects with a rubber shock mount to the exhaust. The steel hanger is what will need to be relocated. This is best done by a qualified welder and will allow enough clearance between the exhaust and the hitch. The process is not especially complicated but for safety reasons you will want to have someone with welding skills handle that. A local muffler shop may be the best option if you do not have the required equipment.
