Hitch and Wiring Recommendation to Tow Trailer with a 2014 Toyota Highlander

What are the necessary components to add a trailer to a 2014 Toyota highlander? Does the electrical get attached to the hitch or is it a wire you pull down from inside the vehicle when you need it?

Helpful Expert Reply:

In order to tow a trailer with your 2014 Toyota Highlander you will need a hitch receiver, wiring to operate the taillights on the trailer, ball mount, hitch ball, pin and clip.

I am assuming that your Highlander is already equipped with a hitch but if not, you will need one like the etrailer Class 3 Receiver, # e98844. This hitch was specifically designed for the Highlander and bolts directly to the frame of your vehicle with no welding required.

If your vehicle did not come with the factory tow package, a 4-way connector at the back of your vehicle, you will need to install the Tow Ready Custom Fit T-One Wiring Harness, # 118449. Simply locate the vehicle’s 10-Pin tow plug underneath the dash on the driver’s side between the emergency brake pedal and the brake pedal, plug in the wiring harness and route the wires to the back of the vehicle. I have attached an installation video and instructions for you to check out.

To complete the towing set-up, you may still need a ball mount, hitch ball, pin and clip like part # C45030, # 63845, # 19260, and # PC3.
