Hitch, Hitch Extension and Weight Distribution Recommendation for a 2015 Chevy Silverado 3500

Question:

About to purchase a 7K car hauler trailer. It has a little over 5000lbs of payload and doubt Ill ever approach that. I have a truck camper on my truck so Ill need a 24inch extension. Im planning to use a sway control and weight distribution system but I am not clear on how that will effect tongue weight. I figure that without weight distribution in place that extension would cut my allowable tongue weight by 50 or so? How will it be affected by weight distribution?

Here are the towing components you will need. For a hitch you will need a Class V hitch with a 2-1/2 inch opening like the Curt Trailer Hitch # C15860. This hitch has more than enough capacity for your trailer even when reduced by 50 percent.

For a 24 inch extension you will want the Titan Hitch Box Extension # RP45292. This also would have enough capacity for you trailer and would be compatible with weight distribution.

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow, this figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle, this would also take into account the weight of your camper. I attached an FAQ on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well.

Typically tongue weight is 10-15 percent of the total trailer weight. Let's assume your trailer weighs 7k when totally loaded an ready to tow. That would mean that your tongue weight range would be between 700 and 1,050. For a system that would fit that range well I would recommend the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System # RP66084. This has the only sway control system on the market that works to prevent sway before it starts.

Due to the weight of your camper you may need to go with a higher rated system.
