Question:
I want to reduce the overall length of my car and rack and roll trailer. Can I drill new locations for the lock mechanism and pin that are 18 inches forward of the ones that are there now, effectively shortening the combned length? I am only carrying at most at one time 2 Kayaks 100 lbs OR 2 recumbents 70 lbs. Tow car is a 2011 Prius.

My contact at Yakima advised that they do not recommend modifying their Rack and Roll Trailer # Y08106. Also, please note that if you did shorten the tongue length it will be somewhat tougher to back up the trailer since every steering change in the tow vehicle will have a larger effect on the trailer's motion. I do understand your intention though, to shorten the tongue length without permanently altering the trailer, however I cannot recommend anything contradictory to what Yakima advised.
Although the Class I hitches offered for your Prius have a 2000-lb maximum towing capacity (please see the link at right) I suggest you verify in your Prius owner's manual that your particular model is approved for towing a trailer.
