Recommended Trailer Hitch for a 2009 Toyota Matrix XRS

Question:

Trailer hitch for 2009 toyota matrix xrs. I do not want to modify the rear facia. 1 does the curt #12221 fit without modification of my facia? Can you tell me the dimension from the mount flange where it touches the frame to the top of the receiver? This will tell me if there is sufficient clearance to the facia. 2 I see #24812 uses three bolts on a side, but the curt #12221 uses two and yet has higher load ratings for gross towing and tounge weights. The curt also appears to have gussets that resist side loads. Can you recommend which hitch design is stronger curt or draw?

Expert Reply:

The Curt Class-II hitch # C12221 has a higher weight rating and would work with your 2009 Toyota Matrix XRS. Draw-Tite # 24812 is a Class-I hitch where as the Curt # 12221 is a Class-II. The Class-II hitch will have a higher rating than Class-I. But keep in mind the maximum towing weight capacity of your 2009 Toyota Matrix is 1,500 pounds per the Toyota Matrix owners manual.

Per Curt instructions, the fascia might have to be trimmed on models with lower fascia but I pulled the Curt hitch # C12221 from our warehouse to provide you the measurement you requested. From the top of the flange mount to the top of the 1-1/4 inch receiver is approximately 6-inches. This hitch also has side gussets so you have an attachment point for your tow chains. See diagram to the right as well as a video.

Please note that all non-trailer loads such as bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps # 18050. Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from Curt.

I have included FAQ's and a couple installation videos for you as well.
