Why is a Hot Wire Needed for Trailer Hitch Wiring On a 2009 Ford Escape

Why do you need the hot wire to the battery? Why cant you just use the connections to the normal tail and brake lights?

Expert Reply:

The hot wire to the battery, for trailer wiring on your 2009 Ford Escape, is needed to protect the wiring in your vehicle. Vehicle manufacturers have started using thinner and thinner wiring due to advances in circuitry. When additional load is placed on these wires it can affect the sensitive circuitry in the vehicle. The power wire provides the power to the trailer lights and the vehicle wiring is used as a switch to tell the converter box which circuit is activated. This system also protects the vehicle if there is a short on a trailer wiring system and it is connected to the vehicle.

The 2009 Escape also has a 3 wire system with separate brake and turn signals and the Modulite converter combines the brake and turn signals on to the same wire so that the trailers 2 wire system will function properly.

The proper wiring harness for your vehicle, without tow package, would be the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Trailer Connector, item # 118551. I have provided installation instructions for you to review.
