Suitability of Tire Chains for Use on 2014 Ford Expedition with 275/55R20 Size Tires

Question:

I have a 2014 ford expedition limited 4x4 with 275 55 r20 all terrain scorpion tires on it. We live in N Arkansas and have several snows up to about 6 and usually no more than 6 inches at a time. I real all these web sites saying you cant put chains or cable on the expedition and then some that say you can. What is your opinion and which ones would work. another person told me I had to go to snow socks? plenty confusing but dont want to mess my vehicle up thanks

You are wise to make sure your vehicle is compatible with tire chains before installing any on your new Expedition. A good starting point is review of the two linked articles that cover much about tire chains and their compatibility with vehicles.

Auto makers get the final word on whether or not their vehicles are suitable for use with tire chains. Your owner's manual will indicate Ford's position on chain use on your particular truck. If not your dealership should certainly be able to tell you one way or the other.

Since you are using large wheels/tires, 275/55R20s, that are larger than the 17- and 18-inch tires typically supplied on the Expedition, you may not be able to use chains. This might be why you read about snow sox, which like other S-Class tire chains like # PW2028C, require less clearance within the wheel wells. Most passenger vehicles are limited to this S-Class variety of chains, but since you are using large wheels on your truck you may have a similar clearance requirement. Again, check your manual and with your dealership.
