How to Install a Brake Controller for a Trailer on a 2009 Dodge Ram Pickup

Today on this 2009 Dodge Ram we will be installing the Tekonsha P3 brake controller along with the wiring harness for it, part number 90195-3020P. The first thing I want to point out is the factory installed 7-pole at the rear of the vehicle and this will be the indicator of whether or not your vehicle is going to have the factory installed brake control port under the dash. The factory 7-pole we are looking for is built into the bumper. It will have the Chrysler logo built on the front. If you do not have this plug you will likely not have the port under the dash that we are going to be plugging into. Thus will have to hardwire your brake controller into the vehicle. 00:38

The first thing we want to do is locate the port that we are going to be plugging our tow package port into. Look right here in between the brake pedal and the emergency brake, there is a white junction box and directly on top of it there is a blue four pin plug. That is the plug that we are looking for that we are going to be plugging our harness into. Now that we have got the wiring harness located we can mount our brake controller into place. I do want to note that the P3 does come with two different mounting brackets and you can pick which one you want to use for your application. The traditional bracket is a more permanent mount and then we have got the quick connect bracket which will also mount to the dashboard area but it actually has clips here on the side that will allow us to quickly install or remove the P3 from the vehicle. 01:20

That leaves us the mounting bracket that we are going to use for our installation today. This mounting bracket does consist of two pieces. The smaller upper portion that is going to do the mounting for us. We need to find a spot on the dashboard to mount that. You can mount it to the left or right of the steering wheel but we want to do it in an area that can be easily accessed. We want to make sure when mounting the bracket that it is straight. We can not have it angled side to side. With the bracket installed you can go ahead and plug the harness back into the P3. Mount it in place. See that the snap in here will go right into the holes under the P3. Just take the other end and plug it into the port under the dash. With that plugged in you will see we have got a read out on the display so we have power. You can see now with the trailer plugged in we have got the digital read on the brake controller. Move the slide bar over and you can see we have got the drill output. With that, that will conclude the installation of the P3 brake controller part number 90195 along with the brake control plug in part number 3020P.
